Timeline

50 Years of Westlake Royal

1970

Vic De Zen founds Royal Plastics in Toronto, ON making window profiles and other plastic products.

1983

The company produces its first weatherseal product, branded Thermostop, using finger-joint wood with a PVC “flex” stapled to the wood substrate.

1985

Royal makes its siding industry debut.

1987

Royal officially enters the pipe business with a new facility in Woodbridge, ON.

1990

Production capacity for Thermostop weatherseal is doubled.

1994

Royal Plastics goes public.

1996

Wood products are totally phased out. Production is completely converted to extruded plastics.

1997

The company is renamed Royal Group Technologies as it breaks the $1 billion sales mark.

2001

Royal acquires Marley Mouldings in Marion, VA—now known as Royal Trim and Mouldings.

2002

Thermostop weatherseal production experiences a 50 percent growth spurt.

2005

Bristol, TN plant expansion is completed.

2006

Georgia Gulf Corporation, a large PVC raw material manufacturer, acquires Royal Group— creating vertical integration of raw materials across Royal’s finished products.

2011

Georgia Gulf Corporation acquires Exterior Portfolio by Crane—a company known for its pioneering innovations—making GGC the third-largest siding manufacturer in North America.

Royal Group becomes Royal Building Products.

2012

Royal continues to pioneer and innovate with industry-changing product lines.

2013

Georgia Gulf Corporation merges with PPG Industries and changes its name to Axiall Corporation.

2016

Westlake Chemical acquires Axiall, making it a Fortune 500 company and a major player in the world of vinyl compounds:

  • 3rd largest chlor-alkali producer in North America
  • 2nd largest PVC producer in North America
  • 3rd largest PVC producer globally

2019

Westlake acquires DaVinci Roofscapes, adding premium composite roofing to Royal’s growing family of premium products.

2020

Our Marion plant covers 20+ acres and more than 1 million sq. ft. of finishing and extrusion capacity. Our Bristol plant expands to about 400,000 sq. ft. Both run 24/7/365.

Westlake Royal Building Products is the largest extruder of cellular PVC components in North America, offering the widest selection of cellular PVC Thermostop weatherseal products and color and profile options to the garage door market.

Royal turns 50, celebrating our accomplishments and our refusal to rest on them.
