As we head into 2023, it’s a great time to start thinking about updating your home’s exterior. Not only can a fresh exterior design add value to your home, but it can also enhance curb appeal and make a statement about your personal style. Whether you’re considering a major remodel or just want to make a few simple updates, here are some top exterior upgrades to consider.

Siding Replacement: Transform Your Home’s Look

If you’re looking to make a major impact, consider replacing your home’s siding. This upgrade can instantly transform your home’s look and provide a clean slate for other exterior updates. With a wide variety of materials and colors to choose from, you can find siding that fits your style and budget. From vinyl siding to composite siding to aluminum siding, the possibilities are endless.

Pro Tip: If you’re not sure which siding material is right for you, check out the top exterior design visualizers for 2023.

Building a New Deck: Expand Your Outdoor Living Space

If you’re looking to create an outdoor oasis, building a new deck or replacing an old one is a great option. A new deck can provide the perfect space to relax, entertain, and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. With many customization options available, from decorative inlays to outdoor kitchens, you can create a deck that fits your style and budget. Consider adding built-in seating, a pergola, or a fire pit to make your new deck even more inviting.

Pro Tip: For a low-maintenance option that will retain its beauty over time, consider a composite decking material such as Zuri® Premium Decking.

Adding or Replacing Shutters: Classic Charm

Shutters are a classic exterior design element that can add instant charm to your home. If your home already has shutters, consider replacing them with updated styles. If your home doesn’t currently have shutters, consider adding them to create a more polished look. With a variety of materials and colors to choose from, you can find shutters that suit your style and budget.

Pro Tip: Shutters aren’t just for style; think about function! For example, a beach house could be well served by having Bahama storm shutters to protect the home from winds.

Painting or Replacing the Front Door: Make a Statement

Your front door is one of the first things people notice about your home, so why not make a statement? Painting your front door a bold color can add personality and style to your home’s exterior. Alternatively, consider replacing your front door with a new style that better suits your personal taste.

Pro Tip: If you have a classic style home, a red door can have the same effect as a bold red lipstick—the right shade is wearable on practically everyone. Learn more about selecting door colors here.

Adding Column Wraps to Your Porch: Affordable Elegance

Column wraps are an easy and affordable way to add instant elegance to your porch or entryway. These durable and decorative PVC covers fit over your existing columns or poles, instantly transforming the look of your front porch. They can be painted to match your exterior palette, and since they are made of PVC, they are resistant to pests, moisture and weather damage.

Pro Tip: You don’t need to hire a professional contractor to add column wraps, check out our handy DIY tutorial for Column Wrap Installation.

Outdoor Living Spaces: The Ultimate Extension of Your Home

As the warmer months approach, now is the perfect time to consider a refresh to your outdoor living space. By transforming dull backyards into true extensions of your home, you can create a comfortable and stylish outdoor living area that can be enjoyed year round.

When it comes to upgrading your outdoor living space, it’s important to start with the foundation and build up. Consider how you plan to use the space, and what times of year you want to use it most. Choosing products that can withstand a variety of weather conditions while still being durable and low maintenance will allow you to spend more time enjoying your new space, with less time spent on upkeep. This guide will provide you with tips and advice on how to achieve the perfect outdoor living space that suits your needs and style.

      Work Your Way Up

Starting from the ground up is essential for any major outdoor living space project. Your first consideration should be a deck or patio that will serve as your extension from inside to outside.

      Ask yourself:

      • Will this space meet my needs for how I want to use it?
      • If I already have a deck, will it support my planned renovations?
      • Is there anything I need to upgrade before I start?
      • Is it more cost-effective to repair or replace my existing deck?
      • Do I want to create a cozy sitting area, an outdoor dining space, or a combination of both?
      • If creating a patio, ask what type of patio material will be most durable and attractive?

Whether you’re starting over, building a patio or reinventing an existing deck, selecting high-quality materials is essential for creating an outdoor living space that’s both functional and stylish. For example,  Zuri® Premium Decking is a great option for those building a deck, while pavers are an excellent choice for those creating a patio.

Zuri decking is made of highly durable and low maintenance PVC materials, making it resistant to scratches, stains, color fading, slips and moisture. Its color palette, which mimics hardwood finishes, also provides the perfect seamless design transition from the interior to the exterior of your home.

      Enhance Your Space

Think ahead to how you plan to use your outdoor space to determine what other furniture and accessories will be necessary. For example, if your deck surrounds a pool, you may want to include storage space for pool toys, lounge chairs, and an outdoor shower. If you love to entertain, you may want to create an outdoor living room or conversation vignettes that exude warmth and comfort.

For cooking enthusiasts, an outdoor kitchen is a must-have addition to any outdoor living space. It allows you to prepare meals while enjoying the company of your family and friends, and can even serve as a source of warmth during colder weather.

If you’re looking for ways to enhance the visual appeal of your outdoor living space, consider adding Versetta Stone® Siding. This product can be used to accent outdoor kitchens, frame fireplaces or stoves, and create focal points. Available in panels, Versetta Stone can be easily installed on any size of wall space, giving you the flexibility to use as much or little stone as you need.

      Plan for Winter Weather

In many parts of the country, rain, snow or cold temperatures can significantly reduce the amount of time you’re able to spend outdoors. To extend your time outside, consider adding a gazebo or pergola to your outdoor space. These structures provide shelter and shade, allowing you to enjoy your outdoor space even when the weather isn’t ideal.

If you live in a colder climate, you might also consider adding outdoor heating elements to continue using your space through the winter. With the addition of Kindred Fire Bowls, you can not only stay warm but also create an aesthetically pleasing ambiance in your outdoor living area, making it the perfect spot for a cozy gathering of family and friends.

Upgrading your outdoor living space can transform your backyard into a true extension of your home, providing a beautiful and functional area to enjoy with family and friends. By carefully planning your renovation project, choosing durable and low-maintenance products, and adding elements such as outdoor kitchens, Versetta Stone accents, Kindred Fire Bowls and pergolas, you can create a functional and stunning space that you can enjoy all year round. Start planning your outdoor living space today and discover the boundless possibilities of exterior design.

Looking for Low Maintenance Siding and Trim? Consider Vinyl or PVC

If you’re thinking about giving your home’s exterior a facelift, replacing the siding and trim is an investment that requires careful consideration. Choosing materials that demand little upkeep and boast longevity is crucial since your home’s exterior will endure extreme weather conditions and wear and tear over time. There are a number of cladding materials on the market today to consider that will both look good and last over the years.

Let’s take a closer look at how vinyl and PVC products outperform when it comes to upkeep, sustainability and versatility.

        Low Maintenance

Vinyl and PVC composite siding products are known for being low maintenance when compared with other options, such as wood. Unlike other materials, vinyl and PVC composite siding won’t warp, rot or attract insects. They also won’t require painting or staining, which saves time and money.

Another advantage of vinyl and PVC composite siding is that it’s easy to keep clean. All that’s needed is a garden  hose and mild soap solution, instead of relying on costly professional cleaning services.

Pro Tip: With its on-trend profiles and colors, Royal® Vinyl Siding can complement any home’s style. Not only does it resist buckling, sagging and warping, Royal Siding requires less maintenance so homeowners can enjoy their home’s siding longer.

        Sustainable and Energy Efficient

Vinyl siding maintains a lower environmental impact over its lifespan than other cladding materials. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developed Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES) software to measure specific environmental concerns such as air pollution, acidification and global warming potential in the environmental life cycle of products. Throughout its life cycle, vinyl releases significantly fewer toxic chemicals into the environment than other siding materials and has a lower overall environmental impact.

Compared to vinyl siding, construction materials like fiber cement contribute 4x to global warming potential, 2x to acidification, and over 3x to air pollution. Compared to other common sidings, vinyl performs amazingly well. According to the NIST, vinyl has a lower environmental impact than brick, and even rivals some wood siding.

Vinyl and PVC composite siding can also be more energy-efficient than other materials. With less susceptibility to cracking and with options such as insulated siding, vinyl and PVC can provide a tighter seal and keep homes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, lowering energy costs.

Pro Tip: Royal Haven® Insulated Siding’s EPS foam offers significantly more insulating power than fiber cement with half the environmental impact. It also reduces noise by up to 45% for a quieter home.

        Versatile

With an array of trim and mouldings options, vinyl and PVC can be used in many ways to accent your home. Every detail of your home’s exterior is an opportunity to make a statement, and with vinyl and PVC, you won’t have to worry about replacing them due to weather or insect damage.

Pro Tip: Kleer® offers PVC trim products that can be used for exterior accents of any size, such as flower boxes that add color and life to your home. Royal® Column Wraps can also be used to give your front porch an upgrade and requires no more than a weekend to complete.

An exterior refresh is a major undertaking, and you won’t want to have to do it again anytime soon. With low maintenance siding and trim options, you can get creative with your home’s new look and enjoy it season after season.
